Dr Samkelo Jiyana graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Walter Sisulu University in 2006 and obtained a diploma in Child Health from the College of Paediatricians in 2010. It was under the mentorship of Professors Tindimwebwa at WSU and Ashraf Coovadia (Rahima Moosa-Wits) that his love for paediatrics grew.
His battle between the love of Internal Medicine and Paediatrics was won over by the children of Mount Frere after completing community service at Mount Frere, Madzikane Ka Zulu Memorial Hospital. With a diploma in HIV Management from The College of Family Physicians, Dr Jiyana also provides services in paediatric and adolescent HIV care. After having completed training at the East London Hospital Complex and The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Dr Jiyana qualified as a paediatrician in 2013. Sparked by the country’s growing need for paediatric cardiologists, Dr Jiyana pursued a fellowship in Paediatric Cardiology with the College of Paediatricians in Port Elizabeth and became a member of the Paediatric Cardiac Society of South Africa.
